It is located off the B711, on the Rankle Burn, to the north of the Craik Forest, by Phenzhopehaugh Hill. The Buccleuch name comes from 'Buck Cleugh' which is a little to the east of the hamlet which was the original dwelling place of the Scott family. They became Barons of Buccleuch in 1606, then earls (1619) and dukes in 1663.
